Webshop or Instagram orders? How small shops can sell online without the headache

Many small shops in the Balkans sell almost everything through Instagram: a customer sees a post, sends a message, asks about sizes and prices, and the order is agreed in the chat. It works — until the messages pile up. Here is how to keep what customers love about ordering by DM, while making it faster for them and easier for you.

Why Instagram selling works — and where it breaks

Instagram is where customers discover products, and a personal chat builds trust. But every order starts from zero: which product, which color, which size, how much, where to deliver. The same questions, dozens of times a day.

Products also get lost in the feed. A dress posted three months ago is almost impossible to find again — even though it is still in stock.

The middle way: a catalog with a smart cart

You do not have to jump straight to a full online store with card payments. A lighter option is a catalog website with a smart cart: customers browse all products, choose colors and sizes, and the cart writes a complete order message for them.

With one tap, the message opens in Instagram DM, Viber or WhatsApp — the customer just presses send. You receive a clean order with every detail, and the conversation stays personal.

What we learned building shops like this

  • Every product needs a home. For the Cipelino webshop we turned years of Instagram posts into a catalog of 152 products, each with colors, sizes and its own shareable link.
  • Prices build confidence. M Parfemi shows clear prices for 20 ml perfumes, so customers fill the cart without asking first.
  • Let customers ask for what is missing. A “requested item” option captures demand for products that are not listed yet.
  • Keep ordering familiar. REDLINE and Zlatara Filigran still take orders in DMs — the website just makes those messages complete and consistent.

When it is time for online payments

  • You get more orders than you can comfortably answer by hand.
  • Customers regularly ask to pay by card.
  • You sell to customers far away who prefer to pay upfront.
  • You want automatic stock updates and order history.

When you reach that point, adding a full checkout on top of the same catalog is a natural next step — nothing has to be rebuilt from scratch.

The bottom line

Instagram is great for discovery; a website is great for choosing and ordering. Together, they turn followers into customers with less effort on both sides.
